During the 2018 NFL Combine Lamar Jackson was expected to be a first round selection. The speed and talent he displayed at Louisville was off the charts. Scouts were eager to watch him at the Combine and many thought he could end up a top 10 pick. Then something happened no one expected: he skipped every drill that didn’t involve throwing. Scouts never got to see or time Lamar Jackson’s 40 time.
The reason? Lamar was concerned that his 40 yard dash might be too fast, leading teams to try and turn him into a wide receiver. He only wanted to play quarterback.
His decision caused him to drop down the draft board and he was selected 32nd. But he didn’t care. He knew his abilities and wanted a chance to play quarterback. The rest is history – after just two seasons he’s become one of the most electrifying players in the NFL and came close to winning the 2019 MVP award.
